Obituary of Leola C. Pfotenhauer

Leola C. Pfotenhauer passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 22 at the Lantern Park Nursing Home in Coralville, Iowa. Leola was born on June 26, 1921, daughter of Eric B. and Amelia (Becker) Carlson, near Grant, Idaho, north of Idaho Falls. After high school, she attended business school and worked in Idaho Falls until meeting A.F.C. Pfotenhauer. They were married in Idaho Falls in 1943. Together, they served parishes in these places: Willow Run, Michigan (1943-1944), Monroe, Michigan (1944-1947), St. Charles, Illinois (1947-1951), Alma, Missouri (1951-1964), Tinley Park, Illinois (1964-1969), Marseilles, Illinois (1969-1974) and Lindenwood, Illinois (1974-1982), when they retired and moved to Rockford, Illinois. In 2002, Leola moved to Iowa City to be closer to her daughter and family. She is survived by: her sister Mabel Bluhm, sister-in-law Lucia Templer, daughter Vivian (Tom) Schulein, grandson Robert (Kate) Schulein, great-granddaughters Harriet and Eloise, grandson Mike Schulein, son Martin (Judith) Pfotenhauer, grandson James, granddaughter Rachel, son James (Susan) Pfotenhauer and grandson Mark (Allie Clark, fiancé). Preceding Leola in death were: her parents, her husband of 50 years, brothers Leonard and Reynold Carlson, sister Vivian Pfotenhauer, brothers-in-law, H. W. Bluhm, James Templer, Martin A. Pfotenhauer, nephew Jim Templer and niece Janet Bluhm. Visitation will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City at 9:00 a.m. Friday, October 28, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a. m. Following the service, the family will travel to Rockford, Illinois for committal at Sunset Memorial Gardens, beside her husband. Leola was a compassionate person, always greeting people with a kind word, and concern for their wellbeing. She was confident in her faith, which sustained her throughout her lifetime. Her kindness and compassion will be missed, but will live on through the lasting impression she left on those she knew and loved.
