Judy Pettit

Obituary of Judy A. Pettit

Judy A. Pettit went to be with her husband, Dewayne on November 25, 2016. Judith Ann Scaffinger was born June 4, 1947, in Albia, Iowa, to Edward and Virginia (Cruise) Scaffinger. Due to family illness, Judy was raised by her maternal grandparents, Marie Monroe Cruise Clark and Asaph (Lynn) Clark in the area around Albia. At 12, Judy moved to live with her father and step-mother, Betty in Iowa City. She graduated from City High School in Iowa City and in December 1964 she married Jerry Stacy. They lived in Chicago Heights, Illinois where their son, Craig was born in 1967. They moved to Iowa City later that year. They divorced and Judy later married (Joseph) Dewayne Pettit in 1971. Dewayne passed away in 2012 as a result of Agent Orange exposure from his military service in Vietnam. During school years, Judy worked at Hamburg Inn #1 in Iowa City. She continued in the restaurant business until health problems caused a career change, as she went to work with homemaker health care with Johnson County and later in protective services and teaching life skills; after that she was employed at Hillcrest Family Services. Throughout their marriage, Judy and Dewayne shared their home with and cared for over 70 foster children of all different ages. In 1992, Judy went to truck driving school so she could join Dewayne driving their tractor trailer through the 48 states and one trip to Canada, which ended in 1997 due to health problems. Later they purchased a motor home, enjoying that until 2010, which allowed them to spend the colder months in the south. Once more together, they can reminisce over their travels, never having to say, “I wish we had…” because they did! In accordance with Judy’s wishes, no public services will be held.
