She married Wendell "Louie" Schukar, a veteran of WWII, in 1947 in Durant where they operated a bowling alley, Idle Hour Lanes. They moved to Iowa City in 1957 where he worked as a mechanic at Proctor and Gamble and she assumed the responsibilities of caring for the home and family. Upon Louie's retirement in 1981, the couple spent winters in Mission TX, until 2005. Betty was a dedicated homemaker and mother. She sewed and mended the family's clothing. An avid gardener, she grew and canned much of their food. She served as a den mother for the cub scouts. When the kids were older she worked with the school district. She loved playing cards and was a crack cribbage player. Betty was a prudent alchemist, keeping experiments in her refrigerator for months before serving them to visiting family. Following Betty's wishes her body was deeded to the University of Iowa Medical School. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later time.
