Obituary of Judith J. Brookhaus

Judith “Judy” Jane Smith Brookhaus was born February 4, 1933, in Waucoma, Iowa.  She and Richard Brookhaus were married on July 12, 1953.

Memorial services will be held at 1pm Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Iowa City, where there will be a time of visitation beginning at 11am until the services.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Judy’s memory to the Bird House- Johnson County Hospice Home.  Online condolences may be sent for her family thought the funeral home website @ www.gayandciha.com.   Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Judy’s family and her arrangements.

Judy Brookhaus attended Iowa State University.  She was catalog supervisor at     J. C. Penney’s for several years and then was a receptionist for OB/GYN Associates for 16 years.  She worked at the polls on election days and was a part-time receptionist at Hills Bank & Trust up until her death. 

Judy received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for her volunteer work at Old Capitol Museum.  She was a member of the Pilot Club of Iowa City.  She was a volunteer at Mercy Hospital in Guest Lodging and at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.  During the summer months, she volunteered at the education center at Kent Park.  Her other volunteer activities have included Ronald McDonald House, UI Museum of Art, the Iowa City/Coralville Convention Center, The Bird House (Hospice House),  Coralville Center for Performing Arts, Coralville Public Library, Salvation Army, the Johnson County Historical Society, NAMI-Johnson County walk, Meals On Wheels and the Free Lunch Program.    

Judy is survived by her husband Richard “Dick” and two sons, Rich (Pauline) and Jim; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jodie; a grandson, Jesse; a brother, Richard; and her parents, Howard and Evelyn Smith.
