Sarah, Maggie and Family - I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I always enjoyed caring for him (I knew I was guaranteed for a few laughs) I will also never forget he was one of the pts I cared for the day after I got engaged. Last Saturday I was thinking about my future and possibly someday having to be a caregiver to my parents or in laws. Right away I thought of the two of you. You guys are my role models for caring for my parents. What a wonderful example of love. Also thanks for the note and the cupcakes, they got me through a night shift. God Bless Gina

To Maddie, Bubba, Kara, and Maya

So sorry you have lost your grandfather. We know how much he meant to you. Although he is no longer on this earth, he will still be keeping tabs on you in heaven. Thankfully he has left behind many wonderful experiences that will continue to fill your heart now as warm memories. You are all great girls and wonderful cousins and sisters to each other. You are so lucky to have each other and such a warm and wonderful family.

Gary was such a fun loving friendly guy to know. I mainly ran around with Brother Glen, but I knew Gary and his whole family. Loved all the Fletchers! Cup, Ruthe, and all of them. I was fortunate to run into Gary at the Maid-Rite here in Muscatine once when he was with all of his little golfing buddies. I recognized him almost immediately. This spring, they were without him since he wasn't feeling well. I almost didn't have enough guts to ask him if it was him, but I did, and I'm most certainly glad that I did. Gary was about the same age as my older sister and they were pretty good friends. I know that Gary will be missed by many.

God Bless his family.

To Gary's family - So sorry to hear about Gary's passing. Gary was one of those "friendly to everyone" people and left a positive impression on many. I met him when I was the receptionist at Hills Bank & Trust in Coralville and he always brightened up the lobby when he came in. He loved to talk about his family and grandchildren and bought Adventureland tickets from me for a number of years so he could take his family. Thinking of you all as you celebrate his life and hold dear all of the many special memories of Gary. Ruth & Paul Hershberger

Glen, I was so sorry to hear of the loss of your Brother Gary. But just imagine what it will be like for him to be surrounded by the glory of God. He has arrived in his eternal home Heaven. This is the blessed hope of every believer. But before WE get there we sometimes see loved ones go before us and we are deeply saddened by that loss..Look for comfort in the Holy Word of God and know that he is with all of you and take comfort in what the Bible promises! As much as we grieve the loss of a loved one the most comforting thought is knowing that a place has been prepared for them and for us also and that place called Heaven is far more wonderful than our earthly home. A place has been prepared for Gary in his eternal home - Heaven.

And Jesus said in:

John 14:1-4 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time!

I was saddened to hear of Gary's passing. He and I were friends for many years starting back in high school athletics. I went to Riverside high school and we competed against Crawfordsville where I got to know him. We also were teamates on the freshman baseball team at ISTC (now UNI). Gary was an outstanding athlete but always very humble. I think he hit some of the longest home runs I've ever seen when I was pitching. A true gentleman we will sorely miss!

I share your grief and sadness at the passing of Gary. Gary was a good friend, always smiling, and never angry. We, Gary, myself, Ted Chambers and Jack Waite shared many late afternoons together at Ted's office talking about the Hawkeyes. We tabbed ourselves as the "Big Ten Commissioners" deciding what was right and what was wrong the Hawks. (Of course, we always had a scotch and water to go along with the discussions.) Ted, who always doubted our (Gary and I) knowledge of the Hawks, called us the "Gar and Lar Show". I sat next to Gary at the Monday Morning Quarterback luncheons. Gary always beat me in the pools at the luncheon. We always laughter and had fun. I will miss Gary very much. My sympathies to all of you. May God find a special place for Gary. Larry Svoboda

My condolences to the entire Fletcher family. I'm sure that you have a lot of great memories to share with one another. I certainly enjoyed my time golfing with Gary over the last 15 years. I'll never forget my year in the league and my first time golfing with Gary. He got a hole in one on the 17th hole with a 6-iron. He then told me the first time he Aced that hole it was with an 8-iron. I'm glad that I got to know Gary and you have my deepest sympathies.

Can't believe how lucky I was to have had a friend like Gary. I deeply appreciated his kindness and support all these years-he even put up my extremely bad putting in many a couples golf tournament. Another good Crawfordsville guy, gone but never forgotten. Love you Fletchers, Pam

Gary, I have such fond memories of you as I was growing up in Iowa City back in '86. I considered myself one of the luckiest Mexican immigrant in town by befriending your daughter Sarah and your family adopting me. When visiting Sarah, I admired your hard work, making a mental note of your arrival home from a hard days work and you making it directly to your Lazy Boy (don't know if it was but you seamed very relaxed!). Thanks so much for opening your home to me and for sharing your family with me. I always thought you were the coolest family one would wished for. I remember traveling with Sarah, you and Sheri to watch Mick play basketball in college and later visiting Sarah in college as well. Then came renting your house on Benton with a bunch of crazy college girls, including Sarah ... but you would give us not just one break but many. Then you met my husband Jose Luis and you welcomed him as you did me a long time back - member those delicious Sunday brunch with the Fletcher's, how could I forger? Now from a distance, I learn you are in paradise, where you belong to be for the big heart you have. I will always remember you and will always be in my heart. Love you and Sheri and Sarah and Noah, and all the Fletcher clan. My mother, Lupita, sends her prayers to the family. With Sympathy, Gina & Jose Luis -2/6/13

All of my memories from junior high and high school have the Fletcher family in them. Gary and Sheri were always welcoming and warm to all of us, like second parents. I never forget Gary giving me a hard time about going to Iowa State my freshman year, and giving Sarah a hard time after the 'car incident'. Gary was much loved and will be in the hearts of everyone whose life he touched. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I'll always remember Gary. I had a crush on him when I was in 8th grade and he was a senior. He was the best athlete, and I remember traveling to the state baseball tournament in Eddyville. The last time I saw him was at the C'ville alumni banquet in 2011. I looked for him in 2012 at the banquet and later heard from Karen Williams that he wasn't well.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Sarah, Mick, Maggie and Sheri I am sorry to hear of news of the passing of Gary he was an amazing man. I remember driving my big wheel down the street when I moved onto your street in 1975. Ya'll had no idea who I was LOL My dad said he was glad there were Hawkeye fans on the street!! So many years had passed and I have so many memories of your family and your dad. He even hired me with General Pest Control when I was between jobs He truly was an amazing man and left a monster impact on my life. I know these next few days / weeks / months will be a challenge.. You know I went thru this with both my parents not that long ago. If you need to talk I am a phone call away. Praying for all if you!!

First, over 30 years ago Dad left us, probably the most merciful way as he died in his sleep and was not sick at the time. Then Mom 17 years ago as she spent almost 2 months after a stroke that left her unable to speak or use her dominant hand and leg. Then Steve 8 years ago after battling with MS for 14 years. Now Gary, who has not felt like himself for almost 2 years. He reminds me the most of our dearl lovely mother who sacrificed her total being for making sure we received all that she could possibly give us in life and the most cherished thing that she gave was her unconditional love. Gary picked up on that as no matter what he faced in life he had a quick to forgive heart and would always give you anything he could to help you whether you were faminly or simply someone who needed someone's love. I will cherish the many times we spent together and even talked on the phone. Our golfing memories have provided me many smiles, laughs and the gift of being blessed with having him as my oldest and most protective brother. After Mon passed, I was guided to find a small wall hanging that best said how much my mother meant to me and our family and feel it fits perfectly for Gary with him being the first of his immediate adult family and will share it, is titled The Broken Chain.....

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide; and though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same; but as God call us one by one, THE CHAIN will link again.

I am so sorry for your loss. I haven't seen Gary in many years, but the first thing I thought of when I saw Glen's note, was baseball. I am pretty sure I remember Gary playing softball with my dad (Zook) in Crawfordsville when I was a kid. He is definately one of the good guys. May God wrap you in comfort and peace during this difficult time.
