Obituary of Ruth Smith

Ruth E. Smith, age 80, of Iowa City, passed away on February 16, 2025 at Solon Nursing Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, 2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City.  A funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home.  Burial will be at a later date.

Born on October 9, 1944 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Ruth was the daughter of Roy and Rose (Cerny) Scott.  She graduated from City High School in 1962.  Later that year, she was united in marriage to Guy Smith on September 8, 1962 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

Ruth had an in-home daycare for many years and had a lasting impact on the lives of those she cared for.  Later, she worked as the Media Secretary at Longfellow Elementary School for 23 years.  Ruth retired in 2010 but continued to help anyone in need.

She enjoyed taking care of kids and making meals for others.  Ruth was known for baking Wilton character cakes and collecting angels, owls and bird figurines.

Ruth’s family includes her husband, Guy; sons, Joe (Kelly) Smith of Cedar Rapids and Scott Smith, Sr. of Iowa City; grandchildren: Scott (Sandy) Smith, Jr., Marissa Smith, Miranda (Will) Avey, Sydnie Smith, Christian Smith, Wyatt Smith, Harvey Smith, and Harley Smith; siblings, Raymond Scott of Iowa City and Rosemary Chown of Melrose, Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, Iris Scott of North Liberty; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Johnson of Ottumwa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: Richard Scott, Roylene Johnson, and Roy Scott, Jr.; and a sister-in-law, Ginny Scott.
