Obituary of Richard A. Carter

Richard “Dick” A. Carter, 83, of Tiffin died Thursday, April 10, 2025, with his family by his side.

A time for family and friends to remember and share Dick’s life will be held from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday, April 15, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.

Richard Avine Carter was born March 18, 1942, in Auburn, Maine. Dick left Maine at a young age and lived in many places and was a jack of all trades. He was a well known musician in his day, Dick Carter One Man Band. He then worked for over 25 years at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry as a mechanical laboratory technician. Known as the “Gadget Man” to those close to him, he could fix it all.

Dick married Linda J. Bowman on July 30, 1979, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Dick loved much in his life, traveling, camping, riding his motorcycle and various bicycles/scooters, music, and recently he kept busy driving for Uber and playing his flight, racing, and farm simulator games. Most importantly Dick loved his family! Dick was a social guy that loved spending time out on the bike trails with his daughter and her friends. He could make friends anywhere at any time, often developing friendships that became family.

His family includes children Cassie Carter (Nick Miller) of Cedar Rapids; step-son Jeremy and his wife, Randi Jelinek of North Liberty; grandchildren, Elijah and Noah; and other family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife.
