Obituary of Willie Nelson

William D. “Willie” Nelson, age 76, of rural Oxford, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the Colonial Manor Care Center in Amana.

William Dean Nelson was born on October 13, 1948, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Donald and Jaqueline (Person) Nelson. He grew up in the Iowa City area and graduated from City High School in 1967. Shortly after graduation, Willie enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served during the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, Willie returned to the area and worked as a cabinet maker and bathtub resurfacing specialist for more than 32 years. In august of 1998, he married the love of his life, Kalee Marie Collins. Together, they shared a deep bond and many meaningful experiences, especially their mutual support for the Oxford American Legion.

Willie was a social and well-loved man, known for his friendly spirit and love of routine. He enjoyed what he called “the rounds,” where he would stop by local spots like Bryant’s Back Burner, and the VFW for a drink, a bite, and conversation. Willie was truly a creature of habit and will be remembered fondly for his warmth, sense of humor and loyal friendship.

He is survived by his son Mark Nelson (Barbara); three granddaughters, Cassie Gutierrez (Juan), Savana Nelson, and Cameron Nelson; and one grandson, Joshua Nelson. Willie was also blessed with four great-grandchildren – Aiden, Luna, Jaxon, and Brixton – all of Clovis, NM. Additional survivors include his sister Rosemary Nelson Cantrell (Bill), of Lawrenceville, GA; nephew Bill Cantrell; and niece Lisa Pulsipher.

Willie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kalee Marie Nelson; his parents, Don and Jackie Nelson; his son, Donald Nelson Jr.; and his nephew, Jason Cantrell.

A gathering for family and friends celebrating Willie’s life will be held sometime in October of this year, to be announced. For updates concerning the services, to share a thought, memory or condolence please visit Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service website @ www.gayandciha.com.
