Condolences
Ab was a wonderful friend—constant, generous, and wise. Over the years, we shared many meaningful conversations, and more than a few laughs. His humor, sharp perception, and engaging personality lit up every room he was in.
Though it’s been too long since I last visited, Ab was never far from my thoughts. He had a lasting impact on my life, both personally and professionally. He believed in me, challenged me, and played a pivotal role in shaping my career—something I will always be grateful for.
I miss him deeply.
Rest in peace, dear Ab.
May the Universe keep his spirit afloat till Eternity!
Mary and I first met Ab and Lil in Navrongo Ghana in 1978 at the “IFCAT” agricultural communication center that he was helping to create. We moved to Iowa City to study Communication for (3rd World), Development, and felt so fortunate when Ab joined that program a few years later, enriching all of us with his knowledge and experience, and the pleasure of friendship we have enjoyed with him and Lil over the years. We worked together in Nigeria on strategies and designs for the launching of new national immunization and oral rehydration therapy programs that in years to come would save hundreds of thousands of lives annually. The logos he produced through participatory processes for those disease prevention programs— accentuating images of healthy, strong babies reaching for the future — were a key element in the popularity, high political profile and rapid spread those programs achieved. A number of other countries incorporated his designs into their own program logos (without attribution, of course! What do you think, dear Ab, a precursor to AI?)
We will miss you, Friend, and we are thinking of you, Lil, and send condolences to all the family.
Beautiful accounting of a life fully and well lived. Jim Herrig and Mary Schreiber.
We will miss having Ab to our home for family holidays, his enthusiasm for Joe's antipasto and Italian cooking, and all of the wonderful conversations about jazz, music, and life. He was a wonderful man, and we're grateful to have known him. Sending Lillian, Marc, Larissa, Liza, Derrick, Evan, Livian, and James all our love.
This beautiful tribute explains why Ab always seemed to be enjoying life, whenever I met with him.
My condolences to Lil and all family and friends.
Lieve Oom Ab,
Emmelie
Growing up every time Oom Ab en Tante Lil came to the Netherlands on holidays, you knew as a kid that it was going to be fun times and jokes, I am very very thankful to have had such a charismatic uncle!
Memories will be cherished!
Much love,
Karel jr
Wonderful, exceptional, inspiring, loving friend. Dear Babo.
