Obituary of Donna C. Carew

Donna C. Carew, age 77 of Iowa City died Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Funeral services will be held at 10am Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at  St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City (Sunday parking will be in effect for streets around the church).  Burial will follow services at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. There will be a time of visitation prior to the services at the church. Family request no flowers are sent for the services and that there will be no reception following the graveside services. Directions to get to the church @  228 E Jefferson St, Iowa City, IA 52245 and later to Saint Joseph Cemetery, 1120 N. Dodge Street, Iowa City.    

Donna Catherine Simmons was born June 6, 1948, in Salinas, California the daughter of Robert and Genevieve (Kinley) Simmons.  She moved to the Iowa City area in 1983 later, she married James D. Carew on April 27, 1991, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church here in Iowa City. Before moving here she worked as an elementary school teacher in a number of towns. She moved here to because of the job at the University which she worked in until her retirement in 2002.

Her family includes her husband, James; sister-in-law, Terry Simmons and her daughters, Kate Simmons and Jen Simmons; brother-in-law, Wilfred (Kathy) Carew and their daughter, Erin (Damon) Strickland, and their children, Paige and Evan Strickland, and their son Nick (Joalene) Carew and their three daughters Audrey, Allie and Livian; Sister-in-law, Susan Shollenberger (Les) and their son, Tyler Shollenberger.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Patrick.
