Obituary of Lawrence A. Swaney

Lawrence A. “Larry” Swaney, age 76, longtime resident of this area passed away suddenly at his home, Thursday, August 21, 2025.

Larry was born June 13, 1949, in Britt, Iowa. He was the son of Raymond and Rosemary (Seiler) Swaney.  Larry was raised on a farm and developed a love for the outdoors as well as animals. Following his graduation from high school, he entered the United States Navy serving his country during the Vietnam War.  He married Nancy L. Young on September 21, 1970, and the couple eventually made their home in the Iowa City area.  He worked for the University of Iowa power plant for many years retiring as Chief Operator.

Larry was a man of many talents and could build, fix and design most anything he put his mind to. He was also a gifted mechanic and loved working on cars. He enjoyed playing in softball leagues well into his 50’s. His other interests include the New York Times crossword, fishing, and watching sports. He loved the NFL, his favorite team was the Vikings. He also loved a good cup of coffee and had an affinity for cherry pie.

His family includes his wife, Nancy; their two daughters, Christine and Sarah Swaney; 3 grandsons, Joseph Culver, Matthew Culver and Jacob Swaney; Larry’s brother, Ron Swaney (Becky); his sister, Sandy Malek; and sister-in-law Ginger Swaney. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his older brother, Frank.
