Obituary of Ralph Henry

Ralph Henry, of North Liberty, Iowa, passed away after a short battle with gastric cancer, surrounded by those who loved him. Formerly of Audubon, Iowa, Ralph carried a name that connected him to his grandfather and a tradition that defined his life. He was a third-generation painter, proud of both his craft and the legacy it carried. He painted houses and buildings across Iowa with care, and he also expressed himself through art, with paintings shown in galleries. One of his proudest moments was helping paint Audubon’s beloved landmark, “Albert the Bull.” His work was not just a job, but a way of leaving his mark in the world.

Ralph’s heart belonged to his family. He adored his wife Maria, who was his partner and greatest love. He was a devoted father to his children Luis (Bethel) and Angelica (Cameron), and a proud grandfather to Luis and Bethel’s children, Lianna, Ben, and Brayden, and to Angelica and Cameron’s daughter, Mila. Ralph never missed a moment to support them. He was especially dedicated to Angelica’s taekwondo, from long practices to every tournament, always cheering and celebrating her accomplishments.

He is also survived by his brothers, Jon Henry (Carol) and Gary Henry; sisters, Lisa Dreier (Scott) and Lori Johnson, and Aunt Lorna. Josh and Amy, children from a previous marriage along with their families.

Beyond his family, Ralph was a force in the Filipino American community. He was passionate about politics and committed to making his voice heard. His presence and convictions left a lasting impression on those around him.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Inga Henry; maternal grandparents, Joanna and Edward Zittlau; paternal grandparents Sylvia and Ralph Henry, and his loyal grand dog, Charlie.

Funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral Home in Iowa City (2720 Muscatine Ave., Iowa City, Iowa 52240). A visitation with the family will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A celebration of Ralph’s life will follow at 4:00 p.m with family and friends welcome to gather and honor his memory. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon, IA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to help his family with funeral and hospital expenses, a reflection of the love and support he gave so freely to others.

Ralph’s life was one of artistry, love, and community. He leaves behind not only the walls and canvases he painted, but also the family he loved fiercely, the community he lifted, and the memories that will forever tell his story.
