Obituary of Serhiy Sheremet

Serhiy Sheremet, age 66, of Burlington, passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Per his wishes, no public services are being held.

Born on January 1, 1959 in Ukraine, Serhiy was the son of Nikolay and Lyubov (Yanovskay) Sheremet.  He attended school in Ukraine and then went into the Military Academy.  Sheremet served with the Soviet Union Navy for 15 years, earning the rank of Captain.

Serhiy was married to Lyubov Darienko.  They immigrated to the United States in 1999 and lived in Los Angels before moving to Iowa.  They lived in Burlington, where Serhiy worked for Champion Spark Plug before retiring in 2023.

He enjoyed gardening, cooking and took a lot of pride baking homemade bread.  In his spare time, Serhiy liked to fly his drone and play on the computer.  Serhiy had a love of stray animals and was always caring for the stray cats in the neighborhood.  He adopted five of them, giving them a permanent home.

Serhiy’s family includes his wife, Lyubov; his children, Alex (Viktoriia) Sheremet and Christine (Kevin) Nova; and grandchildren, Iris and Jacoby Nova.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
