Obituary of Patrick Hogan
Patrick Thomas Hogan passed away on January 1, 2026, at home in Iowa City, after a courageous battle with some cruel illnesses. He was 76 years old.
Patrick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a loyal friend. He retired from the University of Iowa Library Services in 2015. Patrick was introduced by friends to Patricia Kane, known to all as Patty Kane, one summer evening in 1971 in Iowa City. They made an instant connection and were together from then on. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 17, 2025. Patrick was a man who was rich in daughters, as an Iowa songwriter once wrote. He and Patty named theirs Bridget, Erin, and Caitlin. Patrick was a staunch Iowa Hawkeye fan and an enthusiastic student of his family’s Irish heritage. Before pernicious ailments robbed him of some of his vitality, he was an active participant in a variety of sports, including racquetball, ping pong, softball, golf, pheasant hunting, and biking. The easy grace of his distance running brought to mind the athletic traditions of his Irish ancestors. In the last years of his life, he took great pleasure in watching his grandchildren swim and play in his pool, and in attending their games and activities.
Patrick is survived by his wife Patty, his daughters Bridget (Don), Erin Looney (Alex), and Caitlin, and his grandchildren Nuala and Emmet Looney, Finn Hogan, and Cathal, Sean, and Tadhg Mac Ruairi. He is also survived by his siblings Michael Hogan (Gina) of Columbus, Ohio; Sally Mascaro (Rocco) of Farmington, Connecticut; and Donnaree Stockton (Jim) of Richmond, Virginia. Pat has many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved greatly.
Patrick was born on August 31, 1949, in Waterloo, Iowa to Eugene and LaDonna Hogan. They preceded him in death, as did his oldest brother Dennis Hogan and his wife Camille. No funeral service is planned per Patrick’s wishes, but the family will plan a celebration of Patrick’s life at some future date.
