Obituary of Llewelyn A. Simons
Llewelyn Alexander Simons, lovingly known as "Lew," passed away on March 7, 2026, in North Liberty, Iowa, at the age of 83. Born on December 2, 1942, in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos Islands, Lew lived a life marked by dedication to his family, close friends, and mentorship.
Lew graduated from HJ Robinson High School in Grand Turk before embarking on a journey that would take him beyond the shores of his birthplace. After completing his education, he moved to Nassau, Bahamas, where he began a successful career in banking. He worked with Chase Manhattan Bank and later Barclays Bank, where he climbed the ranks and earned a well-deserved reputation of professionalism and fairness.
Beyond his career achievements, Lew was deeply passionate about tennis, a sport that became a cornerstone of his life. Known for his dry humor, candid nature and fierce loyalty to his friends, he combined these traits with his love for mentoring young people through the game of tennis. Lew taught his daughter and grandchildren how to play tennis and extended this passion to countless students across the Bahamas. His dedication enabled many of them to secure athletic scholarships to colleges and universities abroad, leaving an enduring legacy in their lives.
He is survived by his beloved daughter Andrean (Simons) Burnett; son-in-law Paul Burnett Jr.; and three cherished grandchildren—Devlin, Caleb, and Vander. Lew’s family brought him immense pride and joy throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his mother - Cecelia Handfield; father - Arthur Simons; half-brother Louis Simons; and former wife Andrea Munroe. Their memories remained close to his heart.
Lew’s impact on those who knew him will not be forgotten. His loyalty, mentorship, humor, and unwavering passion for tennis have left an indelible mark on many lives. May his memory bring comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Memorial Service will be held on March 21, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Grace Community Church 2707 S Dubuque St. A brief 30-minute visitation will be held before the memorial service.
