John Edward Stockman was born August 5, 1929, near Cosgrove, Iowa the son of Albert and Lucy (Kaplan) Stockman. He attended kindergarten in a horse drawn school bus nicknamed the “Hack” there in Cosgrove. Then first through the sixth grade at Corkscrew Country School House located on highway 6 with Rachel Kennedy as their teacher. In 1940 the family moved to Iowa City where he would attend and graduate from St. Mary’s Catholic School in 1947. There were 17 students in his graduating class, and he was nicknamed “Uncle” because his nephew was also in this class. Following graduation, he volunteered one summer with the U.S. Forest Service working in Idaho. In 1951 during the Korean Conflict, John was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Japan. In Japan he volunteered as a Boy Scout leader, something that served him well years later as he assisted with Troops #218 and #203 in Iowa City.
Returning to Iowa City after the service John worked for Moore Business Forms for a number of years before beginning a career with the University of Iowa Printing Service that spanned over 32 years. Retiring at the age of 63, he found he wanted to continue to work, thus beginning his work at North Dodge Athletic Club, working to his second retirement at the age of 80. He truly loved this job, and he was able to learn the game of tennis in his 60’s and played on the senior league at the club. Another benefit of this job was a annual bonus at the end of the year, working at the University he never had received one, but the Moss family did this for their employees!
John married Florence Moore on June 10, 1962. They were blessed with two sons, Brian and Matthew. John loved being Dad, active in their boys’ activities; and later as a grandpa; couldn’t get enough of the kids. Just a notch below his wife, Florence, their sons, and grandchildren, came his love for his dogs. Sometimes it seemed that his dogs might be a bit more important than humans in his life! John was a longtime member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post 17.
John’s family includes his wife, Florence, their sons, Brian Stockman (Nuria), and Matthew Stockman; four grandchildren, Brian Stockman (Molly), Silvia Lindquist (Nate), Dr. John Stockman (Jessica), and Helen Culp (Eric); two great grandchildren with another on the way, Annabelle and Sophie Stockman; and John’s in-laws, Fred Moore, Janet Organ, Mary Werch (Tom) and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his 11 siblings, Agnes, Esther Maher, Joseph Stockman, William Stockman, Robert Stockman, Helen Alberhasky, Ray Stockman, Lucille Jordan, Masie Villhauer, Paul Stockman and Leonard Stockman; and John’s beloved dogs, Teddy, Toby, and Jackson.
John’s family would like to say thank you to the staff at Keystone Place & Featherstone Senior Living Memory Care where so many cared for John over the past few years.
