Obituary of Vernon M Detert

Vernon M. Detert, age 98, lifetime resident of the North Liberty area died Friday, May 1, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Vernon Marvin Detert was born January 15, 1928 in rural Solon, the son of Charlie and Agnes (Fisher) Detert.  He attended rural Shueyville schools growing up.  He was a farmer at heart and went to work on a farm west of North Liberty in 1948, where he would remain until the farm was sold in 1976.  Many of the locals referred to this farm as the Detert Duck Farm, as Vernon raised ducks along with geese, chickens and other livestock.  He loved the life of farming and enjoyed his large gardens, often sharing with anyone and everyone.  Vernon was known to his family and friends as a very good cook and baker, often baking kolaches and making noodles, true to his Czech heritage.  He was also known to enjoy his fishing, often taking any free moments he could to cast for the big one.  Vernon was of that generation where you would fix it, not throw it away and buy another, thus his ability to be a handyman to many who needed his help.  Vernon was also a lifetime member of Cedar Rapids Moose Lodge 304, where he cooked many meals over the years.

Vernon’s family includes his daughter, Kathleen Detert of Coralville and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Martha Mekota and Wilma Logan; brothers, Leonard, Wilbur, Norbert and Donald.
