Celebration of Life
Condolences
My deepest dympathy to Tim’s famiky, friends, editors. I met this wonderful man when he sppeared in Tucson on a true crime authors panel I moderated at the Tucson Festival of Books. He and I had a chance to chat at a dinner party held by another moderator at her stunning home high above Tucson in the Foothills of the Catalina Mountains. What a delightful, humble and brilliant man. Stunned to learn he is gone too soon. His work lives on. May his memory be a blessing. - Sheryl Kornman
Tim was a wonderful, talented man, and even better human being. He'll be greatly missed in so many ways.
I am a fervent fan of Tim's novels!! God Bless.
Tim was the best friend of my ex-husband, Mark Fite. I watched him in his early days when I was dating Mark, writing at daybreak at Jerry's Garage before going to work as a carpenter while also dealing with the tomfoolery of Mark and Toby and other longtime actor friends. I had the most extreme admiration for his work ethic - and his follow-through. It was Tim who encouraged me to send my music to a fan in France (he found on the early internet) which secured my record deal and a wonderful life touring and playing music in Europe. I am forever grateful Tim helped me get that amazing opportunity.
Tim and I remained friends after he moved to Iowa. I was blown away by his writing and wrote some of the early reader reviews. I love reading and remain a true fan of his gorgeous writing. We kept in touch writing emails about favorite books and happenings in our lives; he loved hearing about my daughter, Josie.
Last year, Tim wrote me one of the kindest emails about what a wonderful job I had done as a mother exposing Josie to all of the arts as a very young girl - including readings that Tim did at bookstores. It meant the world to me. Even more, Tim was kind enough to write a blurb about Josie's script which was incredible and of course beautifully written.
I send love and healing to his wonderful family and friends.
I will miss him madly.
Salutation to Tim: Titionka, Otter and I will miss you so. We loved having you as our friend and neighbor.
It was my true honor to know Tim Johnston.
That happened by shear good fortune.
Tim returned to Iowa City in 2016 on sabbatical from academia. His goal was to finish his second novel, The Current. He rented the house next door. I was his new neighbor.
Tim became so enamored with that time of his life that he resigned from academia, bought the house and set up permanent shop with his dog Pippa.
Tim’s life has been taken from us all way to early. Still, he touched so many….family, friends, colleagues, neighbors….in a such a positive way.
We all remember Tim fondly. His peaceful kindness, his artful skill and dedication to writing, his competence as a carpenter, his willingness to help and his being simply the best neighbor.
And the people he introduced us to.
Mother Judy, always loving and doting, stopping by every Saturday with banana bread from the farmers market.
Brother Tyler, possibly Tim’s best friend, his 5AM-fast-play golf comrade and always his first editor.
Sister Tricia, perhaps the family glue, dedicated and always caring.
And oh, Tim’s wonderful, eclectic friends from LA and around the country that stopped through on visits.
And finally, Ms Pippa, one of the finest dogs ever, the Simone Biles of dogs, the sergeant at arms of the neighborhood, the friend of all people and all dogs. Ms Pippa is all of that because of the superior dog owner Tim was. That too was a skill that Tim kindly shared with a number of struggling dog owners.
Go figure, Tim was also one fit and handsome man.
I will close highlighting Tim’s remarkable lifestyle. Simple yet profound, regimented, dedicated, healthy and focused on that which he enjoyed and could positively effect.
Tim led by example.
Each of us is a better person for having known him.
Tim was and will remain our modern day Henry David Thoreau.
The Carberry family send their condolences to the Johnston family on the passing of Tim. Sending love and light to all who are missing him.
The Matson Family will miss Tim. I will miss him hanging out with the Saturday morning coffee dogs. Deep condolences to all, including dear Pippa.
My Brother and I had the honor to be able to visit Tim in person this past December while back in Iowa City. He cheered me up with his stories and talk of old times and update on his books. The Tim I first knew was in his early 20's when we were students at the University of Iowa and Tim was a gifted athlete and independent thinker. He matured into a gracious and caring man that I wish I had more time to live. I'm glad his dog is being taken care of as it was clear he really loved that dog. This is so sad to have lost Tim, but it is clear that Tim led a happy and successful life and made things better for everyone.
