When I met Irv all those years ago, it was immediately clear that he had my sister’s number and would have no difficulty keeping her in line when required. The strong, silent type for the most part, Irv would interject an apt remark or wisecrack that never failed to reduce the fever pitch when Mary Lou got going on politics or most anything else.

Unlike me, Mary Lou picked the right guy the first time and stuck by him as devotedly as he did her for nearly 50 years.
