Obituary of Elmer Franklin Brooks

Elmer F. Brooks, age 83, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026 at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at the St. Mary’s Hall in Oxford.  A Celebration of Life will be held at 7:00 P.M. at the Hall.  Burial will be at a later date in the Oxford Cemetery.

Born on December 23, 1942 in Doniphan, Missouri, Elmer was the son of Earl and Bernice (Burkett) Brooks.  He was united in marriage to Bonnie Wilcut on December 31, 1960 in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Elmer worked as a mechanic, specializing in semi-trucks.  He started at Middle America Truck Stop and worked at Econo Gas in Coralville before his retirement.  After retirement, Elmer tended bar at the American Legion and the Dawghouse in Oxford.  He also mowed lawns and worked at Wal-Mart, putting bicycles together.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycles and working on anything mechanical.

Elmer’s family includes his children: Kathy Brooks of Oxford, Frank (Marlys) Brooks of Tiffin, Becky Poggenphol of Lone Tree, and Tammy (Tony) O’Leary of Riverside; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his dog and best companion, Bailey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bonnie; and a son, Frankie Bixby.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Family of Elmer Brooks.
