Obituary of Brian Donald Spence

Brian Donald Spence, age 67, of West Branch, Iowa, formerly of Haverhill, passed away August 25, 2026, at Crest View Specialty Care in West Branch.

Born April 29, 1959, Brian was the eldest son of Donald and Ellen (Lemker) Spence. He attended St. Joseph’s parochial school in Haverhill, Lenihan Junior High, and graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1977.

Following high school, Brian enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving for four years. During his time in the Air Force, he was stationed in Guam. Through the GI Bill, he was able to enroll at Marshalltown Community College and earn an associates degree.

Brian enjoyed spending time outdoors, jogging and playing basketball. He was a television and film buff, always watching classic shows and reading the newspaper.

Brian was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Haverhill until it became an oratory in 2007. He then regularly attended St. Henry’s in Marshalltown.

Brian is survived by his brother, Greg Spence of Hills, Iowa; sister-in-law, Marilyn Spence of Marshalltown; a nephew, Andrew; nieces, Amber and Trisha; an aunt, Doris Lemker; many cousins; great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mark Spence; maternal grandparents, Henry and Catherine Lemker; and paternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Etta Spence.

A graveside service will be held at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Haverhill.
