Obituary of Dorothy A. McGinnis

Dorothy A. McGinnis, 76, of Iowa City died Sunday, December 19, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at Faith Baptist Church in Iowa City with burial at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy McGinnis Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be sent to her family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. Dorothy Ann Finley was born July 23, 1934; daughter of Margurite Kelso and the late Charles Finley. She grew up in the Iowa City area and graduated Iowa City High School. Dorothy married Fred “Bud” McGinnis in 1962. She worked for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Urology Department for over 30 years where she was well known for her ability to comfort patients and their families. Dorothy was known for her love of animals and several hobbies including gardening, crafts, and antiques. Dorothy will be remembered for her kindness and gentle demeanor by her family and many friends; she will be deeply missed. She is survived by her husband, Fred; daughters Teresa Terrill of Mt. Vernon and Elizabeth McGinnis of Iowa City; son, Shannon McGinnis (Kathy Hess) of Iowa City; grandchildren, Erin and Jason Terrill; mother, Margurite Kelso; sisters, June (Richard) Madsen and Sharon (Robert) Viramontes; brother, Richard (Stephani) Finley as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles.
