Obituary of Alton Clay Johnson

Alton C. “AC” Johnson, 92 lifetime resident of the Iowa City area, died Saturday, August 20, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. A gathering time for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Alton’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Alton Clay Johnson was born November 30, 1918, in rural Johnson County, Iowa the son of Clay and Neva (Zager) Johnson. He married Betty Jean Yeslinek on November 8, 1960, in Kahoka, MO. For many years Alton worked for the University of Iowa as a mechanic, specifically with the ambulances. He enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, fishing, camping, Nascar, baseball games, but most of all his grandchildren, he so loved being Grandpa! His family includes his four daughters, Jackie Jones and Janetta Duke (Kevin) all of Mesa, AZ; Janice Johnson of Iowa City, and Janet Norris (Jeremy) of North Liberty; 9 grandchildren,, Troy Jones, Garrett Duke, Justin Duke, Samantha McElmeel, Jack McElmeel, Mason McElmeel, Emma Norris, Jacob Norris, and Owen Norris. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty Jean on November 17, 1979, and a child in infancy.
