He attended St. Mary's School in Willey, IA and the Mt. Carmel High School. In Carroll he played baseball for the Carroll Merchants, a team that was part of the "Town Leagues" in that area at the time. Leo enlisted in the Army Air Corps just before Pearl Harbor on December 2, 1941. During his tour of duty, he returned to Carroll and married Dorothy G. Heue on August 10, 1943 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Returning from service he and Dorothy resided in a number of communities until settling near Algona, where they farmed for many years. In 1991, the couple moved to Iowa City in their retirement to be near family. Here Leo was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post 3940, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. If you ever knew Leo, you knew he was one of those easy to talk to, one that never met a stranger, and one of those who always believed that the Chicago Cubs would win the World Series! You see baseball never left this boy.
