Obituary of Vicki Lucretia Burketta

Vicki L. Burketta, age 57 of Iowa City, passed at her home on Saturday, February 4, 2012. Services will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, which will include sharing time in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will be held at 12 noon on Friday, February 10, 2012, at the Glendale Cemetery in Washington, IL. All are welcome to attend the brief graveside service. The other is as though everything is a miracle." Albert Einstein Vicki Lucretia Burketta was born March 26, 1954, in Culver City, CA, the daughter of Victor and Margaret (Fries) Burketta. Following graduation from East Peoria High School, she attended and graduated from Illinois State University with a BS degree in Junior High School Education with emphasis on Mathematics Education, and minors in Physical Education and Business. Her first teaching assignment was with the Hennepin School District, Hennepin, IL in 1976. Vicki taught mathematics, health classes and coached track and volleyball. She returned to college at Illinois State University where she received her Master's degree in 1980. From 1980 until 1984 she was a teaching assistant at The University of Georgia in Athens, while earning her doctorate degree. In 1984 she moved to Iowa City where she supervised student teachers in the undergraduate program at The University of Iowa. In 1985, Vicki began a long career with the Iowa City Community School District which for over twenty years she worked as a Mathematics Area Resource Specialist and as a Mathematics Curriculum Consultant for the Grant Wood Area Education Agency. In 2006, she began working in the College of Education as a Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Teaching & Learning. Vicki's position advanced to Clinical Professor in 2010. In addition to her work within the school systems and University, she owned and directed her company called Think About It, a private tutorial mathematics service for students from elementary through college. Vicki's specialized in diagnostic and individualized instruction meeting the needs of thousands of students over 30 plus years! Vicki Lucretia Burketta was defined by her zest for life, her crazy work ethic, her spirit of fun, her love of family and friends, and her passion for all things Mickey. As a perfectionist, she held herself to a high standard of excellence in all she did. As a teacher, she worked tirelessly to insure that her students of all ages would appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics. As a person of faith, Vicki's strong relationship with God and her unfailing generosity with her time and talents will always serve as an inspiration for us all. Vicki's family includes a brother, Chuck and his wife, Carolyn Cornaghie; a sister, Cindy and her husband, Lee Louret; nieces Nicole and her husband, Craig Geiger, Mollie Louret; nephews, Stephen Cornaghie, Matthew and his wife, Deb Shoemaker; Zachary Louret and a great-nephew, Cole Geiger; many god-children, students, colleagues, and dear friends.
