Obituary of Jack D. Bowles

Jack D. Bowles, 85, of Iowa City, passed away on Wednesday, May 9th, 2012, at the Pioneer Park Care Center, in Lone Tree. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, burial with Military Honors will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in Jack's memory to Hospice Compassus or Pioneer Park Care Center Employee Fund. He was born in Janesville, IL, on December 3, 1926, the son of Mark Hanna Bowles and Hazel Delores (Eggers) Bowles. He attended grade school in Janesville, Chicago, Casey, and Toledo, IL. He graduated from Toledo High School in Illinois in 1945, and was president of his senior class. Jack joined and served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps in 1945 and was discharged with a perfect 4.0 conduct rating. He also attended Eastern Illinois State Teacher's College. Jack held various jobs including U.S. post office 7 yrs, manager of FW Woolworth 8 yrs, manager of a salvage company 5 yrs, owner of the Stardust Inn 4 yrs, realtor/broker 12 yrs, and center manager of AAMCO Transmissions for 5 yrs, retiring in 1989. Jack met and married Barbara Lundgren in Chicago in 1961. Jack and Barbara were avid bowlers throughout the 60s 70s 80s and 90s, bowling in several different leagues. Jack even won the All events in the I.C. Men's city tournament in 1978. They passed on their love of the sport to all four of their children. Jack is survived by his children, Lesa of Iowa City, Mark (Julie) of Tampa FL, Scott of Chicago, IL and Jeff (Linda) of Houston, TX; his sister Marilyn Millin of Eagle River, WI, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his mother, father, brother, Kenny; and step daughter, Debbie. His children would like to thank the staff of Hospice Compassus, and Pioneer Park Care Center in Lone Tree for all the care Jack received during the last months of his life.
