Obituary of Leo E. Zigler

Leo Zigler, 87 formerly of North Liberty died Thursday, March 22, 2007, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Family services with military honors were held Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Leo was born March 8, 1920, in Drakesville, Iowa the son of Walter E. and Ora (Williams) Zigler. During WWII he served his country in the United States Navy and participated in the Normandy D-Day invasion of 1944. On August 28, 1964 he married Esther J. Blair. The couple has lived in this area for many years. He worked as a union finish carpenter for a number of years, and prior to his retirement, worked at Penn Elementary School in North Liberty. He and his wife enjoyed traveling across all of the United States; he was a man of adventure, from his youth through the last days of his life. Leo was a former member of the American Legion. His family includes a step-daughter, Helen Burdick and her husband Gordon of Oxford; grandchildren, Steve Burdick and his wife, Andrea of Oxford, Dwayne Burdick and his wife, Tammy of Oxford, Brenda Countryman and her husband, Lee of Williamsburg, Glen Burdick of Oxford, Gordy Burdick of Oxford, and Wanda Johnson and her husband, Randy of Cosgrove; 7 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren; and his niece, Sandra Lackey of Washington State. Leo was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Leo’s family and his services.
