Obituary of Adelyn C. Campbell

Adelyn C. Campbell, 89, of Tiffin, died March 27, 2007, in Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg, of Alzheimer’s disease. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2007, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin with the Reverend Beverly Marshall-Goodell officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery, west of Tiffin. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Thursday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to either Amenity Hospice, Grace United Methodist Church, or the Tiffin First Responders. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. Adelyn was born December 27, 1917, in Hills, IA, the eldest of 7 children of Nelson and Della (Stover) Siegling. Following graduation from University High School, Iowa City, she attended University of Iowa for two years in order to qualify as an elementary school teacher. While living at her family’s home on land that is now part of Finkbine Golf Course, she taught at West Lucas #3 rural school, which was located on part of the present campus of Iowa City West High School. On April 10, 1938, she and Donald W. Campbell, of Tiffin, were married in Cedar Rapids. They farmed near North Liberty, then near Cosgrove, and in 1943 bought a 186-acre farm on Highway 6 just west of Tiffin, where they lived and farmed for approximately the next 60 years. During this time, Donald was one of a handful of farmers who first introduced Yorkshire hogs into the United States. Adelyn served as a substitute teacher at various schools in Johnson County while she was raising her family. Later, she worked for H&R Block preparing taxes. As Clear Creek Township treasurer, she was instrumental in restoring Oak Hill cemetery, which had become run down. She was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin and of Eastern Star. Her family includes her son, David and his wife Katharine, Tiffin; son Douglas and his wife Ann, Tiffin; and daughter Nancy Utman and husband Roger, Ankeny. She has four grandchildren, Gwyneth Rost, Iowa City; Rhona Schneider, Silver Spring MD; Drew Utman, Council Bluffs; and Dana Utman, Council Bluffs; and one great granddaughter, Anastasia Schneider; the Michael Clark family of Kalona and Steven Clark family of Coralville. She is also survived by her brother, Lee Siegling and his wife, Blanche of Oasis. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald; a grandson Ryan Utman, brothers Elmer and Ray Siegling; and sisters Gertrude Norris, Ruth Kesselring, and Rita Auge. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Adelyn’s family and her services.
