Obituary of John Thomas Baines

John Thomas Baines, 93 formerly of Iowa City died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at the Crestridge Care Center in Maquoketa, Iowa following an extended illness. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 7, 2007, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 11am until 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. John was born May 7, 1913, in Jonesboro, TN the son of George and Minnie (Sexton) Baines. His family moved to this area while he was a child and he attended schools here. On November 24, 1936, he married Zelma Holderness in Iowa City. For a number of years he farmed here, he also had worked for the University of Iowa for over 12 years and later for the Iowa City Community School District for ten years. He had been a member of the Eagles Lodge. His family includes his children, John “Jack”Baines of Junction City, Ks, Raymond Baines of North Liberty, David Baines of Yeagertown, PA, Robert Dale Ames of LeMars, IA, Fred Hunt of Sierra Vesta, AZ, Jean Donley of St. Joseph, MO, Bart Lyon of Temple, TX, Terry Fleming of Junction City, KS, Carl Rabey of Ferley, NV, Amil Baines of Iowa City, Danny Baines of Iowa City, Dale Baines of Hills, Bea Cihla Cedar Rapids; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ann, Pearl and Mary. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 3 children, Opal Lester, Charles Baines, Jack Simmerly, 4 grandchildren, 5 brothers, and 4 sisters.
