Obituary of Gertraud Christine Malin

Gertraud C. Malin, 56 of 2801 Highway 6 East, Iowa City died Monday, April 30, 2007, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 3, 2007, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7pm Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in her memory. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. Gertraud Christine Thul Malin was born July 4, 1950, in Homburg, Germany the daughter of Erwin Albert and Karola (Schmidt) Thul. She has been a citizen of the United States for a number of years, living in Boone, Iowa before moving to the Iowa City area in 1996. Both in Boone and in Iowa City she worked in the nursing field. She was united in marriage to Larry D. Malin on July 14, 1996 in Boone. Those that knew her knew her love of animals, especially birds, she also enjoyed the outdoors, sewing, crocheting and knitting. Her family includes her husband, Larry; two sons, Joseph A. Aprile presently stationed in Korea in the Army, and Mark O. Aprile of Iowa City; granddaughter, Shannaye Aprile; step-children, Matthew Malin and his wife, Julie of Boone, and Ann Calkins and her husband, Seth of Iowa City; step-grandchildren, Tyler, Tanner, Rebecca, Hunter, Sherry, and Amber; sisters in the United States, Gisela Phelps and her husband, Frank of Ogden, IA, and Sybilla Purdue of Florida; other siblings still living in Germany; and members of Larry’s family. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Gertraud’s family and her services.
