Obituary of Duane M. Lacina

Duane M. Lacina, 65 of 135 Ravencrest Drive, Iowa City died at his home Friday, May 25, 2007, surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Tim Zimmerman officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30pm Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where a sharing of stories and memories will start at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Camp Courageous or the Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @www.gayandciha.com. Duane Michael Lacina was born April 2, 1942, in Iowa City the son of George and Lavina (Winkel) Lacina. He was in the second graduating class from Regina High School – the class of 1960. Duane enlisted with the Iowa National Guard and later in the Army Reserves. Duane was married to Patricia (O’Brien) Lacina of Solon for 13 years. He later married Lori (Detweiler) Lacina, with whom he shared the last 27 years of his life. Duane lived in the Iowa City/West Branch area all of his life. In West Branch he owned and operated Lacina's Skelly and Sky King Restaurant for 15 years, he was the first president of the Industrial Development Corporation, he was a president of the West Branch Chamber of Commerce, and was active in the Lions Club and the American Legion. He then became a real estate broker and owned and managed many local properties. Duane and Lori enjoyed college and professional sports and traveling around the country together. Duane treasured his life with his family, from watching his children grow to playing with his grandchildren. He was known to say, “My family is my pride and joy. My kids are my Pride, my grandkids are my Joy!” Duane’ family includes his wife, Lori; children, Brian Lacina and his wife, Shawn of Sarasota, FL; Brenda Kurtz and her husband, Todd of Iowa City; and Shelly Prybil and her husband, Wes of Solon. Duane adored his six grandchildren: Emily and Ben Lacina, Tyler and Micaila Kurtz, and Josh and Allison Prybil. Duane’s family also includes his brothers: Francis (Rita) Lacina of Iowa City, Don (Marilyn) Lacina of West Branch, Ray (Bonnie) Lacina of Solon, Steve (Julie) Lacina of Iowa City; and Lori’s parents, Ron and Gelaine Detweiler of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings in infancy. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Duane’s family and his services.
