Obituary of Edwin P. Dlouhy

Edwin P. Dlouhy, 86, of Iowa City died Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in Edwin’s memory to Iowa City Hospice or the American Heart Association. Dlouhy was born March 28, 1921, near Swisher, Iowa, the son of Benjamin Sr. and Pauline (Vecerka) Dlouhy. He attended Stone Academy near Solon, Iowa. He married Dorothy (Fuhrmeister) Dlouhy on February 8, 1950 and farmed with his brother near Morse until 1950. From that point on, Edwin worked at Hawkeye Lumber, Iowa Lumber, was a carpenter for Nick Peet, and worked for the University of Iowa General Store for twenty-nine years until he retired from in 1991. He enjoyed woodworking and drawing. Edwin also enjoyed camping, boating, NASCAR, collecting miniature tractors and Hot Wheels. His family includes his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Debbie Chelf and her husband, Nick; Lori Weitzell and her husband, Kirk, all of Iowa City, three grandchildren, Brian Chelf, Erin and Emily Weitzell; brother, Milo Dlouhy and his wife, Mary Ellen of Hills, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Eleanor Cotter, and Blanche Raim; and three brothers, Ben Jr. Dlouhy, Bob Dlouhy and Charles Dlouhy.
