Obituary of Harrison Kane

Harrison Kane, 82, formerly of 260 Black Springs Circle, Iowa City died Friday, August 3, 2007, at the Oaknoll Health Center of complications related to a rapidly progressive dementia. Memorial services will be begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City with Reverend Nancy Haley officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow at the church following the memorial services. The body has been cremated. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Iowa City or the Memorial Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the World Wide Web at www.gayandciha.com. Harrison Kane was born January 2, 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Harry J. Kane and Ruth Ungerer. He received his pre-college education in Brooklyn and entered The City College of New York in 1940. He then served 40 months in the U.S. Army during World War II attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the Armored Force. He graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the City College in 1947 and a Master of Science from Columbia University in 1948. In 1961, he was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Urbana. From 1948 to 1964 he was employed first by a consulting engineering firm, and then by the Department of Army in Wuerzburg Germany, and subsequently was on the faculty of the Pennsylvania State University and the University of Illinois. He joined the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Iowa in 1965. He served as department chair for a number of years and was a member of the State Board of Engineering Examiners. He retired in 1993. He married Mary Elizabeth Rist, of Wymore, Nebraska, September 13, 1952, in Wuerzburg. Mrs. Kane died in November 1993. He is survived by two sons, William H. of Durham, NC and Charles L. of Narberth, PA, a daughter Anne E. Kane of Merion, PA, and six grandchildren.
