Obituary of Brian F. Mccabe

Brian F. McCabe, 81 years, Professor Emeritus of the University of Iowa School of Medicine, died October 7, 2007 at Oaknoll Health Center in Iowa City, following a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, with visitation at the church from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Private burial will follow the service. (All donations should specify the research.) Brian was born June 16, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan, son of Major Charles J. and Rosalie T. McCabe. He attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and in 1943 joined the Navy as a medical corpsman, returning a year later to attend the University of Detroit for a B.A. degree. In September, 1951, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Fecteau while attending the University of Michigan, School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, graduating in 1954. Following his residency in Otolaryngology at Ann Arbor he was asked to join the faculty. In 1964, Brian was appointed chairman of the University of Iowa School of Medicine’s Department of Otolaryngology, moving his family to Iowa City at the time. Throughout his career, Brian wrote and published extensively. He was, for many years, editor of The Annals, an international journal in his field. He was dedicated to teaching, research and caring for his patients. Professionally, Brian was active in national and international medical societies and boards, receiving numerous awards throughout his career. In 1980, ‘81 and ’83 he organized a cadre of physicians to present lectures and surgical techniques in several Chinese cities at the invitation of the Chinese Medical Association. Brian retired from the University in 1996. Hobbies included sailboat racing and sailing with his family on Lakes Michigan and Huron. He was also an avid reader and word- smith, and he enjoyed working the daily crossword puzzles. Brian is survived by his loving wife Yvonne of 56 years, son Brian Jr. and wife Sriyanthie, of Flagstaff, Arizona, and daughter Bevin and grandchildren, Mackenzi and Dakota Brian of Sedona, Arizona; sister Charlene Bell of Toronto, Ontario, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers John and Emmet McCabe. Gay and Ciha Funeral Services will be handling funeral arrangements. Friends are invited to join Brian’s family for a reception from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Museum of Art Atrium in Iowa City.
