Obituary of Carrie O. Lewis

Carrie Odessa Lewis, 94 died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City with Reverend Mark Pries officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Gay & Ciha funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City, where a Carnation Rebekah memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Amenity Hospice. Carrie the daughter of Hugo and Grace (Brandt) Graper was born September 7, 1913, in Union Township of Johnson County, Iowa. She attended Hazel Glen School and graduated from Cosgrove High School in 1931 and the Irish Business College in 1933. She was a bookkeeper for Voss Auto Supply Store for a short time. She married Eugene B. Lewis in 1938 at the Swedish Lutheran Church in Centerville, Iowa. They farmed for 3 years, and then in 1941 they moved to Iowa City. Mr. Lewis passed away in 1976. In October of 1998 Carrie moved to Coralville. Mrs. Lewis worked for the University of Iowa for 33 years in the food service department at Currier and Quadrangle Cafeterias. The last years she worked as a cashier at Quadrangle until she retired. She then went on tour to various countries in Europe. After retirement Carrie volunteered at Iowa City Senior Center, where she was honored as a 20 year volunteer, she was four years on the Council of Elders. Carrie also volunteered at Zion Lutheran Church and belonged to the Naomi Circle. Carrie was Past Chief Athens Temple Pythian Sisters and belonged to the Carnation Rebekah Lodge # 376 since 1947. She also belonged to Lady’s Encampment Auxiliary #5 and the Past Grand Club. She was active in the Golden Age Club and was one of four officers to help draw up the Charter. She belonged to many card clubs, loved flowers and gardening. Carrie is survived by three sons, Erv (Elyse) Lewis of Iowa City, Robert (Jane) Lewis of Loveland, CO, Howard (Dorothy) Lewis of Coralville; two daughters, Sandra (Hal) Weinard of West Liberty, Linda (Ed) Scheetz of Coralville; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and one sister Bernice Zabloudil of Ainsworth. Carrie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Glen Graper, and Ivan Graper. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Carrie’s family and her services.
