Obituary of Pierce E. King

Pierce King 75, of Iowa City, died January 26, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics due to an extended illness. Cremation services were provided by Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. At Pierces’ request no other services are planned. Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Pierce was born December 20, 1932 the son of Henry and Lillian King. He studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. A long-time member of the Iowa community of architects, Pierce began his architectural practice with an office in Muscatine and later in Iowa City. He was, in the words of local architect Roy Neumann," an architect's architect." Pierce studied with Mies van der Rohe and was a proponent of the International Style of architecture in which form follows function. Pierce was affiliated with the local Optimists Club. He was also a proud founding member of the Iowa City chapter of the Architectural Society for the Study of Housing and Other Land Environments. His family includes his dear sister, Janice Lavitt; brother-in-laws Howard Lavitt, and Lee Minor; his nieces and nephews, Alan Lavitt, Melissa Lavitt, David Lavitt, Steven Minor, Alan Minor, and Lynne Minor van den Berg. He is also survived by his beloved companion, Carole Winter of Iowa City. He is preceded in death by Dr. June Helm, a prominent anthropologist and a professor at The University of Iowa.
