Obituary of Orval J. Floyd

Orval Floyd 81 of 429 N. Mt. Vernon Drive, Iowa City died Monday, January 28, 2008 of cancer, at the Iowa City Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held at 10am Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City with Reverends Mark Pries and Jan Rippentrop officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Zion Lutheran Church or an organization of your choice. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Orval James Floyd was born December 9, 1926, near Arlington, Iowa the son of Benjamin and Ardis (Scales) Floyd. He attended Troy Mills Schools and later graduated from the University of Iowa with both a Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree. During World War II Orval served in the United States Navy. On August 14, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lucile Bigalk of Cresco, Iowa. As a chemist, he worked in research labs and retired from the Iowa State Research Lab in Iowa City. Orval was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and for many years a member of the Ocean Waves Square Dance Club. He enjoyed gardening, traveling and watching Hawkeye sports. His family includes his wife, Lucile; siblings, Lyle Floyd and his wife, Ruth; Joy Unruh all of Cedar Rapids; Berniece Wachal of Greenville, Illinois, Judy Levsen of Laguna Woods, California, Shirley Barcus of Whittier, California; Donald Floyd and his wife, Hilda of Beverly Hills, California and Delmar Floyd and his wife, Verna of La Canada, California; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Oakley Floyd and a sister, Laree Price. He will be missed by family and friends. We want to thank the staff at Mercy Hospital, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, at Iowa City Rehabilitation Center, and Iowa City Hospice for their patience and loving care.
