Obituary of Werner G. Dietrich
Werner G. Dietrich, 79, of 732 Tipperary Road, Iowa City, died Friday, April 11, 2008 surrounded by his loving family, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Werner was born May 6, 1928, in Arnsdorf / Penig, Germany the son of Otto and Frieda (Schroeder) Dietrich. At the age of 16 Werner was drafted into the German Army during World War II. Following the war, he traveled extensively throughout the world and he eventually arrived in the United States. Here he met and married the love of his life, Helen Holmes on June 12, 1965 in Galesburg, Illinois. For over thirty-three years he worked as a tool & die maker for Owens Brush, later being Oral B. He retired in 1993. He enjoyed traveling with his family, was an avid reader, gardener, and dedicated morning swimmer at the Mercer Pool. Werner was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Iowa City. Werner is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Douglas Dietrich and his wife, Gail, and their children, Zachary and Luke; daughter, Darcy Pacheco and her husband, Francis, and their children, Samuel, Christina, and Adam; sister, Charlotte Gierelt and brother, Fredo both of Germany. Werner was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will be from 4pm Monday until services. Family services at the grave will be held in Galesburg, Illinois. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in his memory.
