Obituary of Barbara K. Shepherd

Barbara K. Shepherd 61, of 5392 160th St. NE, Solon died Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a courageous battle with cancer. A gathering of family and friends will be 4 to 8pm Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Solon at a later date. A memorial fund has been established in Barbara’s name at the discretion of the family. Online condolences may be sent through the web @gayandciha.com. Barbara Kitterman Shepherd was born March 21, 1947 in New Jersey the daughter of Douglas B. and Doris (Dunster) Kitterman. Growing up Barbs family moved often, following her father’s career with Ford Motor Company. She graduated in 1965 from Lincoln Community Schools in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After high school she moved back to the United States to attend college. In the late 60’s she was invited by Paul Engel to attend the Writers Workshop at the University of Iowa. After moving to Iowa she met Jim Shepherd. Jim and Barbara were married July 24, 1971 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, of Iowa City. In 1972 they moved to Naples, Florida where they started their family. In 1980 Jim, Barb and children moved to the family farm in Solon. Barbara is retired from Johnson County S.E.A.T.S. Her hobbies included genealogy and she was an accomplished poet. Barbs family includes her husband James A. Shepherd of Solon; two sons James A. Shepherd III (Lisa) of Princeton, WI, Doug B. Shepherd of Glenwood, IA; grandchildren Kylie Ann , Connor James Shepherd; mother Doris Kitterman of Lake Mary, FL; brother David Kitterman (Liz) of Puerto Rico; two sisters Ann Ferguson of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Kathy Kitterman of Argentina. Barbara was preceded in death by her Father. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Barbara’s family and services.
