Obituary of Julia J. Peterson
Miss Julia J. Peterson of Iowa City, Iowa entered into rest on Friday, May 23, 2008. Miss Peterson was born in Moline, Illinois and attended schools there and in Iowa. She graduated from the University of Iowa with high honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and to Theta Sigma Phi (journalism honorary society). She had a long career with the University of Iowa as Assistant to the Director of the Iowa Testing Programs and as Senior Editor. She worked with the late Professor E.F. Lindquist during development of the Iowa Testing Program and related programs. She was the author of a history of these programs, The Iowa Testing Programs: The First Fifty Years, which was published by the University of Iowa Press. Poetry and prose by Miss Peterson won prizes and citations and appeared in numerous publications. At the time of her death, she was a member of the National League of American Pen Women, the Iowa Poetry Association, and the American Association of University Women. She is preceded in death by her sister, Inez Anderson, of Kansas City, Missouri and by her brother, Conrad L. Peterson, of Tacoma, Washington. She is survived by a niece, Sally S. Atherton, and her husband, Robert M Atherton of Augusta, Georgia. Memorial donations (in lieu of flowers) may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation, Iowa City, Iowa 52242 or to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.
