Obituary of Helen E. Pierce
Helen E. (Spivey) Pierce, 93, longtime Iowa City resident died at her home, Wednesday, August 13, 2014.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, followed by a reception for family and friends at the funeral home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date. Helen Esther Spivey was born October 20, 1920, in Lone Tree, Iowa the daughter of Jasper A. and Mary Ruth (Chapman) Spivey. She was a graduate of Tiffin High School in 1939 where she lettered in girls basketball both her junior and senior years. Later she attended and graduated from Iowa City Commercial College in 1960. For many years she worked in the Dietary Department of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, retiring as Dietary Supervisor in 1981. She was a member of the River Community Church (formerly Bethany Baptist Church) for over forty years.
Her family includes her children, Robert D. Pierce (Connie), Janet Stockman (Bill), and Joan Alberhasky (Tim); daughter-in-law, Carole Pierce; 8 grandchildren, Robert J. Pierce (Dawn), Randy Pierce (Theresa), Rick Pierce (Lori), Bryan Pierce (Tracy), Warren Pierce (Pam), Christopher Stockman, Matthew Alberhasky (Emily) and Sarah Franczyk (Jake); 17 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren; Helen's last surviving sibling, Evelyn Price; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, son, Frank L. Pierce; brothers, Ken and Ted Spivey; and sisters, Lena Krueger, Lucille Eisentrager, Margaret Keil, Mearl Douglas, Dorothy Montgomery Miller, and Lola Reynolds.
