Obituary of Mary Smedley Patton
Mary Smedley Patton, 96, of Windmill Manor in Coralville died peacefully in her sleep July 15, 2008. Mary chose to be cremated and her family will have a private celebration of her life this weekend in Iowa City. She will be buried in New Haven, CT at a later date. Mary Adamson Smedley Patton was born in Zion, IL on June 28, 1912. She was the daughter of Annie Laurie Wilson and Harry Thomas Smedley. She married James Patton on June 20, 1935 in Hamden, CT. Mary and Jim made their homes in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Virginia before returning to Virginia to retire in the early 1970s. As a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Campbell County, VA, she served for many years as a volunteer for the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Inglewood Baptist Church in Lynchburg where she served as a part-time church secretary and a member of the choir. Mary was an avid Hawkeye fan and the Iowa Swimming Team held an extra special spot in her heart, especially when they were coached by her son, Glenn. Mary is survived by her children: Bruce and his wife Judith of Cape Canaveral, FL and Glenn and his wife Joyce of Iowa City. Also surviving are her grandchildren and their families: Marcia and her husband Tim Donovan and their children, Darby, Drew, Kenzie and TJ, JJ and his wife Aymee and their children, Lance and Leah, and David and his wife Daphne and their children, Karis, Kellan and Kai. She is also survived by her sister Margaret Boyce of Los Angeles, CA. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jim and siblings Helen Monsson, Harry Smedley and John Smedley.
