Obituary of Dorothy A. Shalla

Dorothy A. Shalla, 90 formerly of 606 7th. Avenue, Coralville, died Thursday, August 7, 2008, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 6pm Monday at the funeral home. Dorothy Arylene Shalla was born January 18, 1918, in Brandon, Iowa the daughter of Ira and H. Louise (Nightengale) Zinser. After graduating from University High School, she attended Iowa State Teacher’s College. For over 35 years Dorothy worked in the University Business Office retiring in 1987. Dorothy was very active in her church, First Christian Church, she served on many committees, but her most fulfilling role was as a church school coordinator; she worked with the Coralville Planning and Zoning Committee, Johnson County Historical Society and had been President of the Mary O.Coldren Home. She guided and supported her grandchildren in all their endeavors. She particularly enjoyed her great-grandchidlren and their music abilities. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening, flowers, Lawrence Welk, eating catfish at the Amana Colonies and cheering on those Hawkeyes in football and wrestling. Her family includes her son, Ron of Deland, Florida; granddaughters, Julie (Donald) Music and Dawn Klein both of Coralville; grandsons, Steve, Matthew (Jodi) of Tiffin; great-grandchildren, Meredith Music, Andrea, Patience, Emily and Elizabeth Klein. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn in 1963; daughter, Beverly Klein; brothers, Lloyd and Wilfred; and sister, Iris L. Zinser.
