Obituary of Majel J. Mitchell

Majel “ Madge” Mitchell 74, of 606 Stuart Ct, Iowa City suffered a severe stroke on Saturday, October 4, 2008 and died later that day at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Iowa City. A gathering of family and friends will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City. Madge was born August 8, 1934 in Washington, IA to Milo and Irene (Holmes) Arthur. She graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1952 and attended Iowa State Teachers College before graduating from The American Institute of Business. On June 26, 1955 Madge was married to Bill Mitchell. In 1965 they moved to Iowa City where Madge worked for ACT, and retired in 1996 after 28 years. Madge was a member of St Marks Church, Chapter FG. T.T.T.. She enjoyed her Friday morning breakfast group, her monthly grandma club group, and spending time with her family. Madge loved to travel and she and Bill had many great vacations together. Her family includes husband Bill of Iowa City; son Mark (Jacque) Mitchell of Iowa City; daughter Judy (Terry) Strackbein of Charlottesville, VA; three grandchildren Luke Mitchell of Mesa, AZ, Sarah Mitchell of Iowa City, Emily Mitchell of Iowa City; brother James Arthur of Ainsworth, IA; and mother-in-law Olive Mitchell of Washington, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents. Gay & Ciha funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Madge’s family and service.
