Obituary of Marion Jeffries

Marion G. Jeffries, 92 of Iowa City died Sunday, October 19, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 23, 2008, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Jeffry Belger officiating. Entombment will be at the Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorial donations can be made in Marion’s memory to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Mrs. Jeffries was born on May 20, 1916, in Monroe County, Iowa. She was the daughter of John M. and Isabelle Stevenson. In 1937 she married John M. (Jack) Jeffries of Russell Iowa. The couple moved to Chariton in 1939 where her two sons were born, John M (Jack) II in 1944 and Steven in 1949. The family moved to Iowa City in 1959 where Mrs. Jeffries occupied her family’s home until her death. In Chariton, Mrs. Jeffries was the president of the Garfield Elementary PTA, treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary, a Den Mother to the Cub Scouts, a member of the ladies golf league of the Chariton Country Club and Carrier Manager for the Ottumwa Daily Courier. In Iowa City she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar Rosary Society and was proud to become a member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her Sons John M. (Jack) of Amsterdam Netherlands, Steven of Eugene, Oregon and her sister Betty Hersman of Iowa City. Marion was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 49 years, her brother-in-law Vernon Hersman; nephew Jeffrey and niece Gretchen Hersman.
