Obituary of Ronald Barkalow

Ronald Elmer Barkalow 77, of 320 S. Dubuque St. Iowa City died Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City due to an extended illness. A gathering of family and friends will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City. Burial will be at Overman Cemetery in Atalissa, IA at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Ronald’s name. Online condolences can be sent through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Ronald E. Barkalow was born November 28, 1930 in Atalissa, IA. The son of Elmer and Elise Helen (Beaver) Barkalow, he attended Atalissa School System. Ron was a member of the United States Army and served during WWII. Ronald drove semi trucks for 42 years for various companies, in the mid 1990’s he worked as a security guard for UTA Automotive, in the late 90’s he worked as a custodian for ACT. Most recently he worked at Sharpless Auction selling used cars. He was a member of the Eagles Club, an avid Chicago Cub’s fan, and enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune, and The Prices is Right game shows. Ronald’s family includes daughter’s Melissa Lesnet of Iowa City, Kristine (Tim) Irwin of Milwaukee, WI; son’s Jon Barkalow of Altoona, IA, Neil Barkalow of Cedar Rapids, Tracy Barkalow of Coralville, Troy Barkalow of North Liberty, Justin Barkalow of North Liberty; grandchildren Molly Lesnet, Chelsea Lesnet, Haley Hammer, Benjamin Irwin, Michael Irwin, Hannah Irwin; great-grandson Brody Sobolik; two brothers Robert (Dorothy) Barkalow of Colorado Springs, CO., Jerry (Laura) Barkalow of Lakeland, FL; close nephew Keith Barkalow of Iowa City; and three former wives Shirley Barkalow of Iowa City, Carol Ambrose of North Liberty, and Alice Lenoch of Iowa City. Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, and two brothers John “Red” Barkalow and Richard Barkalow.
