Obituary of Richard K. Campion

Richard K. “Dick” Campion, 77 of North Liberty died at his home Tuesday, December 30, 2008, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2009, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 pm Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established or memorials can be made to Iowa City Hospice in his memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Richard Keith Campion was born March 25, 1931, in Iowa City the son of Earl L. and Bessie L. (Stimmel) Campion. Following graduation from Solon High School in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He returned to this area following service. On January 14, 1961, he was united in marriage to Mildred Collins in Tipton, Iowa. He has spent his life in the carpentry profession, working for Paulson Construction in West Branch, Berger Construction and retiring from McComas-Lacina Construction both of Iowa City. Richard was a member of the American Legion for over 52 years, presently with Oxford American Legion Post #537. He loved the outdoors, fishing and camping, Richard continued his carpentry work in retirement, often doing odd jobs for family and friends. His family includes his wife, “Millie”; children, Kalee Nelson (Willie) of Oxford; Perry Collins (Linda) of Solon; Marshall Collins (Rhonda) of Mammoth Spring, AR; Steve Collins of Tulsa, OK; Sue Drollinger (Guy) of Iowa City, and Gary Collins (Janet) of Golden, CO; 20 grandchildren, Kenny, Don, Mark, Kim, Julie, Tracy, Angie, Chuck, Jeremey, James, Heather, Aaron, Jessica, Lasca, Hannah, Megan, Adam, Jarod, Allison, and Eddi Jo; 29 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Billy Campion (Carol) of Tipton, Leland Campion (Kathryn) of North Liberty, and Gerald Campion (Linda) of Iowa City; sisters, Kay Walenta of Iowa City and Cheryl Campion Bengelli (Allen) of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Nelly Campion of Georgetown, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Campion, son-in-law, Dale Hostetler, brother-in-law, John Walenta, and sister-in-law, Janet Campion.
