Obituary of Anna Margaret Gay
Anna M. Gay, 82 of 506 S. Dodge Street, Iowa City died Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Memorial services will be held at 7pm Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with the Dr. John McKinstry officiating. Family interment services will be held at a later date at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services and following the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Annas memory to First Christian Church in Coralville. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Anna Margaret Gay was born February 1, 1926, in Iowa City the daughter of George Robert and Helen (Lake) Gay. She graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1944, and received a B.S. degree in Physical Education from the University of Iowa in 1948. She was a physical education instructor, taught first aid and health classes in high schools in Perry, IA, Rock Falls, IL, Taylorville, IL, retiring from teaching in 1982 after 22 years at Seneca High School, Seneca, IL. In Seneca she was involved with the intramural recreation program, coached interscholastic soccer, volleyball, and basketball. She served as the membership chairman for IAHPER, and was a member of the Midwest Field Hockey Team, a public library board member, and other activities. During her time in Seneca, she was proud to have built her own home in 1964, and soloed as a pilot in Dwight, IL. Following retirement she returned to Iowa City enjoying her family and the many activities she was involved in. Including being a charter member of the New Horizons Band, a member of the Delta Theta Tau Philanhrop Social Sorority, and an active member of the First Christian Church. Her family includes three brothers, Charles Gay of Iowa City; George Gay and his wife, Kathrynn of Iowa City; and Robert Gay and his wife, Jeanne of Philomath, OR; sister-in-law, Marilou Gay of Iowa City; 16 nieces and nephews, 41 great-nieces and nephews, and 12 great-great- nieces and nephews. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Dorothy Adamson; brother, Richard Gay; sister-in-law, Dorothy Gay; and a great-great nephew.
