Obituary of Donald K. Wood

Donald K. "Don" Wood, 79, of Iowa City died peacefully Thursday, May 21, 2009, at the Mercy Hospice following a long illness, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Iowa City following services. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and prior to the services on Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Don's memory to either Iowa City Hospice, Hospice of Mercy, or the West Branch Fire & Rescue. Online condolences may be sent through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Don was born February 24, 1930, to Maude (Campbell) and Dwight M. Wood in Cedar Rapids, IA. He grew up on a farm west of Iowa City and south of Tiffin, and attended Tiffin High School as a freshman, graduating from Iowa City High School in 1948. While in high school, Don served on the student council and was class vice president his senior year. Don loved his sports and lettered in basketball at City High during his three years there. He was Johnson County 4-H president in 1948, and was a past president of the Regina Booster Club. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and spent 15 months overseas in Korea, reaching the rank of sergeant. On May 26, 1953, Don married "Tootie" Petersen. They lived east of Iowa City where they farmed and raised their family. He worked at Moore Business Forms approximately 20 years taking an early retirement in 1985. He devoted his time, along with his wife, owning and operating Hi Point Golf Course for 28 years. Don had a love of the great outdoors, fishing, deer hunting, Hawkeye and Regina sporting events, but family was the love of his life. Don's family includes his wife, Tootie and their three children; Sue (Barry) Hartsock of Lone Tree and children Jared (Shaunna) and Jesse (fiancé Liz Danner) Hartsock; Cindy (Scott) Foster of Iowa City and children Hallie (Justin) Hamilton, Jacob, Cody and Chase Wombacher; Scott (Lori) Wood of Iowa City and children Mackenzie and Nathan Wood; great-grandchildren Cooper Hamilton and Brady Hartsock; brother Lorin "Bud" (Lavonna) Wood; in-laws Ivan Ball, Marilyn (Carty) Mangold and Donna (Dick) DeBrie. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Norma Ball, and three infant children.
