Obituary of Clarence L. Brannon

Clarence L. Brannon, 93 of Iowa City died Saturday, September 20, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 11am Thursday, September 25, 2014, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery where military honors will be provided. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Clarence's memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Clarence was born May 5, 1921, in Eldorado, OK the son of George and Amy (Clonts) Brannon. Following graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII. He moved to Iowa City in 1965, where he had spent a career in the carpentry and plastering business. On June 9, 1977, he married Dorothy Marie Reece Fuhrmeister. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles Lodge, and the American Legion all in Iowa City. He loved playing cards at the Legion, enjoyed going gambling, was proud to have served his country in the Navy, and was one that forgot little, even in his later years. He was once referred to as the "Walking, Talking History Book" for his knowledge and ability to remember most anything! His family includes four daughters, Barb Brolik (Bill) of Cedar Rapids; Paulette Williams of Jefferson City, MO; Shirley Hamond (Mike Biles) of Louisville, KY; and Connie Hanson (Russell) of Iowa City; son-in-law, David McCune (David) of Iowa City; 13 grandchildren, Anna Foy, Alicia Porter, David Porter, Cathy Porter, Donnie Westcott, Christina Surface, Danelle LaFarge, Teresa Thompson, Mike Hanson, Daniel Hanson, Mindy McCune, and Matthew McCune; 24 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews including a couple of his favorites, Caroline Flower and Russ Bauwers; and a longtime dear friend, Mel McMorris He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dorothy; daughter, Bonnie McCune; grandson, Paul Thompson; three brothers and two sisters.
